 “Bridging and Transcending Generations through Music”

Within the musical landscape of contemporary Taiwan, different ethnic communities each possess their own unique cultural connotations and historical experiences, while different generations likewise hold distinct musical memories. For older generations, the popular music culture associated with their youth has largely moved away from cultural forms such as traditional ballads, nanguan, beiguan, and bayin or tea-picking opera, and may instead be represented by campus folk songs, classic rock, or Taiwanese enka. Younger generations, meanwhile, are immersed in K-pop, hip-hop, electronic dance music, and even virtual idol concert culture that transcends the boundaries of physical reality. Differences in taste often create generational gaps, yet music also possesses a powerful connective force capable of serving as a bridge across ethnicity, age, and time. Amid the objective realities of generational rupture in musical culture, new humanistic currents, conceptual reflection, and emerging digital technologies are encouraging possibilities for generational crossing and reconciliation between different musical cultures. The theme of this issue, “Bridging and Transcending Generations through Music,” seeks to explore how Taiwan, amid the historical realities of various cultural ruptures in the 21st century, has gradually begun to experiment with forms of plural coexistence through practices of “sharing” and “rediscovery.” In the fields of education, performance, creative practice, the preservation and practice of intangible cultural heritage, and the emerging domain of AI, this issue aims to explore how deeper forms of resonance may be found among musical and cultural traditions once regarded as oppositional.

We welcome submissions from scholars and practitioners in music and the arts, cultural studies, gender studies, sociology, and related fields. Topics may include, but are not limited to:

  • Humanities research on ethnicities and traditional music, and practices and strategies for safeguarding intangible cultural heritage
  • Critical studies of the cultural experiences and expressions of popular music across different generations
  • AI technologies in musical practice, and interdisciplinary practices and reflections
  • Imaginaries and contemporary practices for transcending generational boundaries in music and the humanities

Through this call for papers, we hope to encourage interdisciplinary dialogue between music, different fields of knowledge, and forms of lived practice, while deepening our understanding of the possibilities and dynamic relationships involved in cross-generational reconciliation within contemporary music and humanities.
